In line with the Union Government’s promise of establishing a Petroleum Varsity (Prestigious Univ of Petroleum & Energy Studies, UPES) in Andhra Pradesh as mentioned in the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014, the state government has taken steps towards setting up the Varsity.
After the Union Government’s nod, the state government has recently allotted 150 acres at Anthakapalli village in Visakhapatnam district. The government is expected to complete the construction in the next three years.
The proposed university in Andhra Pradesh will be the third petroleum university in India with others located in Dehradun (Uttarakhand), Gandhinagar (Gujarat) and in Uttar Pradesh.
Presence of Petroleum University in Visakhapatnam adds a new boost to the growing hub of premier educational institutions in Andhra Pradesh. Already, IIM Vizag had commenced the classes for the first academic class this year. The fact that Petroleum University will be set up in Vizag will give a global traction to the education within the state.
UPES is the only university so far to have set up a working model Oil Rig on campus. It is also the first Indian Energy Institution to set up an in house Bio Diesel laboratory.
