Operation Muskaan, a nation wide initiative was launched by the Tirumala Police to trace underage and destitute children. The mission was launched on 2nd January 2015.
The main intention behind this operation is to prevent child trafficking and rescue children from the mafia groups who engage them in begging and other anti-social activities. Tirupati is the town also known for having a track record of many kids who ran away from their homes. So far, a strict vigil was being enforced by the TTD and no major incidents have been reported so far.
Operation Muskaan will come handy to address the issue at a macro level. Police suspect employment of several underage and destitute children by the local shopkeepers as the town is frequented by over 60,000 pilgrims on an average everyday.
Talking to the media, Circle Inspector Ramlingamaya stated that the special drive was being taken up by the Tirupati (Urban) SP Gopinath Jatti and would continue till the end of the month. Identified children will be counselled and shall be reunited with their parents.
