If you thought that there will be nobody to beat Pullela Gopichand, hang in there. For here comes another winner from the family itself.
Pullela Gayatri, the daughter of Gopichand and Lakshmi recently marked her territory. She set a brand new record that would be so hard for other kids her age. 12 year old Pullela Gayatri became the youngest ever to win the National Under 17 Title, partnering with J Vaishnavi Reddy in the All India Junior Ranking Tournament in Dehradun.
Gayatri won the doubles under-17 title twice at the national level in succession, also proving to be the best in the under-13 singles in India. The 7th standard student of Glendale Academy has developed an inborn flair and passion for the game, accompanying her father regularly to the Gopi Chand Academy.
“For the next five years, she will be playing in both singles and doubles. Then we will take a call on specialisation,” confirmed Lakshmi, a visibly happy mom with the way Gayatri is growing to become to the next best.
“We don’t want to tamper with her natural game by giving all sorts of advice. Luckily, she is mature enough to handle the pressure on the given day” stated Gopichand.
Gayatri sees her idols in the former world champions Ratchanok Intanon and Lin Dan. She is also currently preparing for the Gulbarga All India Ranking Tournament (under-13 and 15 years) to be held in a couple of days from now. Her favorite pastime is music, apart from maintaining the form for the game!
