Karbonn joins the illustrious list of ‘Make In India’ initiative. The leading domestic handset vendor will invest Rs 200 cr to set up a manufacturing plant at the new electronics hub in Tirupati. This hub will also have facility for other brands such as Lava, Celkon and Micromax.
“We are setting up an integrated facility at Tirupati. The plant, which will be operational by September next year, will have a manufacturing capacity of 500,000 units a month,” Sudhir Hasija, Chairman, Karbonn told the media. Hasija also confirmed that the giant will invest Rs 200 Cr in the facility at Tirupati and will employ a workforce of 2000 members in its pilot run.
“We currently have a monthly capacity of 1.8-2 million units and we are looking at scaling this up to 2.5 million by December next year,” he said.
Karbonn has its plan laid out way forward. The company plans to develop entire manufacturing ecosystem along with component manufacturing within the country itself. Currently, Karbonn has a unit in Noida that manufactures features phones. The giant also intends to open another facility in Haryana that will have three times the layout as compared to Noida.
Andhra Pradesh is soon turning out to be the global hub of mobile phone manufacturing. With players like Foxconn, Gionee, Celkon, Lava, Micromax, Asus and now Karbonn, more is in store ahead for the state in terms of dynamic industrial and economic activity.
