Whiz kid hailing from Guntur, Bommini Mounika Akshaya has been awarded the Women Fide Master Title, winning two gold medals. One medal was won as an individual and another a team honor.
Mounika bagged seven points out of nine total and pocketed the gold in the Under 12 Girls segment, adding 150 points to her overall rating.
A student of Bhashyam Blossoms, Mounika successfully completed a grand double as the girls team consisting of champions like Saina Salonika and Swarna Braganza topped the points aggregate.
In her entire performance, Mounika lost only once, to Zhang Jasmine Haomo, a player from New Zealand and drew an even with Bach Ngoc and Tran Nhat from Vietnam.
Now, Mounika will compete in both rapid and blitz formats at the 16th ASEAN age group chess championships in Singapore.
“Two major tournaments are awaiting Mounika. She will be taking part in the Commonwealth Chess Championship in New Delhi from June 20 and then the Asian under-13 championship at Seoul from August 3 to 11,” Mounika’s coach Murali, native of Ponnur confirmed.
Mounika will commute daily to Ponnur, 30 km from Guntur to hone her skills with her coach, who was previously instrumental in shaping the career of Grand Master Lalith Babu.
