Famous freedom fighter and former MP, Bhattam Srirama Murthy passed away at a private hospital on Sunday at Visakhapatnam. He was 89 and is survived by a daughter and a son.
The well known politician from Vizag had been ailing for sometime. Mr Murthy was a well read man, known for his shrewd principles and voicing about atrocities on the big leaders. A good orator and a writer, Mr Murthy also worked with newspapers as a desk job during his earlier days of life.
The respected politician was initially with the Socialist party, before joining the reigns of Congress. He was also elected to the assembly four times, and was made a Minister three times. In 1984, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Visakhapatnam on the Telugu Desam Party ticket.
Mr Murthy was revered for his many contributions, few including appointing M S Subbalakshmi as an official singer for the State and for TTD. He was also responsible for getting better compensation package for VSP displaced persons.
The great reformer was born on 12 May, 1926. Mr Murthy was elected to the Assembly from Vizianagaram during the years 1957 and 1962 and from Parawada in 1972 and 1978. Later, he joined the TDP and was elected to the Lok Sabha.
Bhattam’s last rites were performed late in the Sunday afternoon with State honors.
