AP Becomes the First State in India to Criminalize Sex Buyers

Written by

As to what will now be a first in the country, AP will become the very first state to punish people who purchase sex in the brothels. Implemented as part of the crackdown operation on the slavery of sex workers and their children, the state government has taken this initiative.

There are strict laws that are prevailing against sexual abuse, human trafficking and running brothels. However, there has been no action taken so far on the real culprits – people who use these services and sustain the existence of prostitution in the country.

To this effect, the state government of Andhra Pradesh had appointed a panel of legal experts and campaigners, asking them to study all the anti-trafficking laws. The govt asked the group to identify laws against the buyers and make recommendations in the next 60 days.
