Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had shared during the Amaravati foundation ceremony that the Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) will soon set up a Dredging Harbour at Antarvedi in East Godavari district.

Soon after this announcement was made, a group of senior officials from the DCI picked momentum and inspected the proposed site at Antarvedi along with local officials and elected representatives.

The DCI officials have expressed their willingness to allocate 200 acres of government land for this project. To this effect, a go ahead seems to have been cleared for the construction of the dredging harbour. Dredging harbour at Antarvedi will be the first of its kind in the whole of India and third biggest in the world. There is every possibility of the works to commence within six months from now.

The Rs. 1,800-crore dredging harbour-cum-training centre is capable to handle the maintenance part of the dredgers that are into the job of de-silting the ports maintained by the government and private companies. This harbour can become a prime centre that facilitate dredgers not only from India, but from the entire South Asia.

The land identified for this project at Antarvedi is lying vacant at present. DCI has stated that it is ready to address the livelihood issues of the people in the vicinity. Few residents are likely to be evacuated for the project and revenue officials are on the job of compiling their land records.

“In the first phase, the EG district will get qualitative road, as the DCI needs god connectivity from Eetakota to Antarvedi to move its equipment to the project site. Similarly, there is a possibility of the local youth getting employment in the project,” said Collector H. Arun Kumar, while speaking to a leading newspaper daily.

“We can take the help of the National Highway Authority of India, which can bring the 60-km stretch under the ambit of the NH216,” P. Ravindra Babu, Amalapuram MP stated. Babu has visited the site and also has interacted with the DCI officials. “My concern is about environment. But the DCI representatives assured me that they are going to build a green harbour,” he confirmed.
