On 16th April 2017, a new train with Vistadome coaches was flagged off along the route of Vishakhapatnam – Araku by Railway Minister, Suresh Prabhu. The coaches have been specially designed and comprise of facilities for entertainment, rotatable seats, glass roofs and GPS (Global Positioning System).
The transparency of the glass roofs can be adjusted, thanks to the opalescence that can be electronically controlled. Mr. Prabhu tweeted that the people traveling through scenic routes like the Vizag – Araku ones can actually enjoy the view as they head towards their destinations.
He also shared images of the Vistadome coaches which have been designed keeping the disabled and the elderly in mind and thus have automatic sliding doors for compartments and wide side doors. According to sources, these coaches are most likely to start operating for passengers by Thursday.
These coaches with an observation lounge will be attached to the Vizag – Araku- Kirandul passenger train. Chandralekha Mukherjee, the Divisional Railway Manager of Waltair said that these coaches will be detached from the train in the morning when it reaches Araku and then reattached to it in the evening when it is on its return journey. She added that the fare for travelling in these coaches will be higher than the ongoing general fare.
