Xiaomi comes straight out of AP’s Sri City plant. The pride of the new state that is soon becoming India’s largest mobile manufacturer.
The new Mi 5 series, as assured by Hugo Barra, VP, Xiaomi International went on sales in India. The phone had been in the making for over two years.
Mi 5 is a huge leap forward for the Chinese flagship mobile giant. Even though Xiaomi has been selling phones in India since 2013, Mi 5 comes forth with enhanced quality and higher expectations in the target market. The new variant is also an elevated goal for Xiaomi that plans to expand its presence in India and other south east Asian markets.
The all new Mi 5 comes breaking into the market with style. Let us look at the features.
Pros – An Elegant Make Similar to Mi Note Series
Yes, the new Xiaomi adapts lot of looks from the Mi Note series. The new handset has a dainty 3D Glass Curve Design, as smooth as they come. The metal frame skilfully merges with the glass back on the edges. The Mi 5 has is more of slopes and curves, and bears super elegant looks with 7.25 mm thickness. The handset that weighs close to 129 grams is quite an impressive make with an efficient camera features. The phone also has a 3D ceramic variant.
Cons – Too Slippery
The new Mi 5 handset is quite a slippery slope. Users have to hold this kind of phone with extra care and fragility. The handset’s bezels are much thinner on the sides than those at the top and bottom. The display is close to 5.15-inch, making the phone have a taller frame. There is a slim ceramic home button on the front, the first of its kind among Xiaomi phones. This also functions as a fingerprint scanner, just like in case of Redmi Note 3. The soft buttons beside the home button show two backlit pin points.
Pros – Excellent Spec Sheet
Xiaomi has transgressed all levels as far as spec sheet is concerned. Mi 5 becomes the first device to ship with Qualcomm’s Flagship Snapdragon 820 chipset in India, ahead of Samsung Galaxy S7 / S7 edge’s Exynos 8890 chipset. The Snapdragon 820 offers Qualcomm’s custom processor cores. Four Kyro cores (two clocked at 1.8GHz and two clocked at 1.4GHz) have been paired with the Adreno 530GPU.
Cons – No Expanded Storage
Xiaomi Mi 5 variant in India comes with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage configuration. The top end Xiaomi Mi 5 with a ceramic back has 4GB RAM and 128GB storage along with the Kyro cores clocked at 2.15GHz. And just like last generation Xiaomi flagships, the Mi 5 too doesn’t allow an option to expanded storage.
Pros – Really Reflective Display
The Xiaomi Mi 5 comes with a 5.15-inch full HD display, which is really reflective. The handset has IPS LCD panel which gives good viewing angles and sharp text display. Mi 5 also supports Sunlight Display just as Mi4, that dynamically adjusts the brightness on pixels. This means no strained eyes when out in bright sunlight.
Cons – Software Could be Upgraded
Mi 5 comes with Android 6.0 Marshmallow coupled with Xiaomi’s MIUI 7 OS atop it. You really cant make out the difference in Mi 5 from the older Android OS sporting devices such as the Redmi Note 3 or Mi 4i.
There is no drastic upgrade from the MIUI 6, apart from some new features in the OS. Xiaomi has added more Indian themes to the MIUI 7. An animated profile picture feature called ‘Showtime’ has been introduced, which lets other MIUI users see your animated selfies when you call them instead of the routine profile picture.
Pros – Performance
Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC along with 3GB of RAM make Mi 5 efficient with performance. Opening and switching between apps, playing high end games, opening over 20 tabs in Chrome and so on are things that the Mi 5 can handle with ease.
Other than the main features above, the camera and the battery are sustainable, making Mi5 a great choice for buying, as against the main players in the Indian market.
