Munaga Aaku Pesarapappu Koora – Recipe To Try This Weekend

Drumstick vegetable, belongs to Moringa family is full of nutrients. Not only the fruits, but the leaves are also edible. It is called Munaga or Mulaga in Telugu. The tree is full of  medicinal values as well. The leaves are good source of beta carotene, iron, vitamin C, protein and potassium.

My grandma used to make a delicious curry out of the leaves. It is simple, yet very tasty.Here is the recipe for the curry. Do try it at your home this weekend.


Munaga Aaku Pesarapappu Koora or Drumstick Leaves Curry


  • 3 cups – Drum stick leaves: Removed from stem, cleaned and washed
  • 1 cup – Green gram without skin – soaked and drained
  • 1/2 cup – onions chopped into thin slices
  • 2 green chillies thinly sliced few curry leaves
  • 2 tablespoon red chilli powder
  • 1 table spoon – Coriander seeds
  • 1/2 tablespoon – Cumin seeds
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • salt to taste
  • 1/2 tablespoon julienned ginger


1 teaspoon mustard seeds pinch of hing


1. Heat oil in a pan ( take a frying pan with extra room so that the curry will not be mushy)

2. Add mustard seeds and pinch of hing

3. Add curry leaves

4 . Add onions and green chillies – fry till onions are translucent

5. Now add the Muringa leaves

6. Saute them till the oil coats it – do not over fry them

7. Now add the soaked green gram

8. Fry a little and then little water just to cook them enough ( make sure not to put more water)

9. In a separate pan – dry roast coriander seeds and cumin together

10. Grind coriander, cumin, garlic and red chilli powder

11. Add salt to the curry and then add the ground coriander and cumin paste

12. Switch the heat off and add the julienned ginger pieces

Enjoy with hot rice or chapathi.
