A GUIDED TOUR OF TELUGU PAST THROUGH 27 SHORT STORIES
If there were to be a perfect tool to the understanding of history, the one imagined by H G Wells fits the bill. It’s the ‘Time Machine’. Alas! We are yet to invent one. Until then we have only the human imagination to ride on, which more often takes us to the fantasy lands that never really existed. Historical persons – kings, poets and heroes – are often elevated to the status of demigods or vilified as demons. Story after story tells us the same – a fight between good and evil – except the points of views differ. But the common people who lived in the past, our forefathers, were neither good nor bad. They were like us, whose day to day life is dictated by the social processes – riding the political, social and religious ups and downs like a roller coaster. We are their legacy. But we know little about them as the historical writings completely ignore them.
In this context, Sai Papineni’s ‘Andhrapatham – A Journey through History’ is different as it tells the stories of our forefathers. From the depths of Stone Age to the beginnings of the modern times, each story takes the reader to an episode in past arranged chronologically to give the feel of how the society had progressed through ages. Each short story is accompanied by an illuminating note on the socio political context.
The collection of short stories is published by Arts & Letters Hyderabad. The book was unveiled yesterday, during NATS Convention, at the Anaheim Convention Center, Los Angeles by Sri Tammareddy Bharadhvaja in the presence of hundreds of families of North American Telugus and visiting dignitaries.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr.Bharadhvaja said, ‘Research is the mainstay of historical fiction. Sai Papineni has made a niche for himself with his well-researched novel Andhranagari, his magnum opus on Amaravati. His stories are realistic and scientifically tempered.’
Reviewing the book, Mr. Anand Kuchibhotla, founder of Siliconandhra University said, ‘The stories touch those seminal processes that made us what we are today. Instead of kings and battles, they tell us about the lives and times of our forefathers.’
Mr. Danji Thotapalli, Cultural Convenor of NATS 2015, praised the author saying, ‘Historical canvas of the book is the widest ever attempted by any writer.’ The collection consists of 27 stories from 2000 BCE to 1945, taking the reader on a guided tour of the past, to the farthest corners of the Telugu speaking states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
Responding to the comments, Mr. Sai Papineni said, ‘It is extremely heartening for an author to be received so well so far away from home. It is a clear sign of awakening of ‘Telugu Consciousness’ reaching beyond the political boundaries and straddling across continents.’
The book is available in all important book stores in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It is also available onwww.amazon.com for the residents of the USA.
