This weekend had proved to be super interesting for the Telugu and Hindi movie goers everywhere. Rudhramadevi, the warrior’ess’ saga in Telugu released the very day Aishwarya Rai’s come back film, Jazbaa opened in theaters. Going by the reviews that have been incoming since the first show of the day, it looks like both the powerful leading ladies have landed themselves in a less than fitting treatment.
Anushka Shetty and Aishwarya Rai also coincidentally hail from the popular Bunt community of Karnataka. Twice the beauty for the screens to behold!!
Come South, Gunasekhar’s Rudhramadevi released with much of fanfare and excitement. The comparisons were inevitably made with S S Rajamouli’s Baahubali, as the audience flocked to theaters loaded with their ‘bench marked’ expectations. However, despite lavish production values, interesting characters and intriguing story line, Rudhramadevi failed to meet most expectations. People who have watched the film so far have been near disappointed with the dragging screen time and wasted characters. Allu Arjun and Anushka received a special mention for their outstanding performance in the film, beyond the mundane screenplay which fast plummeted during the second half.
Go North, Jazbaa released with glorious anticipations. Particularly a come back film for Aishwarya Rai after her long sabbatical with motherhood, people’s curiosity was above all measures to go see her perform. An out and out thriller, Jazbaa received mixed reviews and not so echoing applause in totality. Aishwarya Rai plays a powerful character of a criminal lawyer whose daughter gets abducted under unforeseen circumstances. What Rai does to get her daughter back forms the rest of the story. While the movie mongers appreciated Aishwarya’s effervescent screen presence and performance, they have strongly opined that Sanjay Gupta was not the director for a force like her. Views have been floating around stating that any other leading director would have extracted the best out of a super talented actress like Rai.
Overall, looks like both Shetty and Rai could not gather much of a raise on the pedestal with their woman-centric strong films this weekend. More reports are awaited.
