Owing to his smashing performance and amazing victory against Chen Long, the World and Olympic Champion, in the Australian Open Super Series which concluded last week, Kidambi Srikanth would be awarded a cash prize of INR 50 lakhs along with a Group 1 post in the government and a 1000 sq. yards site for a house in Amaravati. The announcement was made by AP Chief Minister, N Chandrababu Naidu on 28th June.
With this victory, Srikanth has become the first Badminton player from India to have won different Super Series titles, back to back. According to the CM, Srikanth is an inspiration for all the young players who dream of winning medals at the international level.
The felicitation ceremony of Srikanth, who is the winner of Indonesia and Australia Open Super Series, was held at Tummalapalli Kalakshetram. CM Naidu was the chief guest of the ceremony and at the occasion, Srikanth presented him with a badminton racket. The Chief Minister was sportive enough to play for a few minutes on the dais.
Pullela Gopichand, Srikanth’s coach was also presented with INR 15 lakh by the CM.
While addressing the gathering at the occasion, CM Naidu said that all the sports should be given equal importance. He added that the allotment of 5 acres of land for developing the Gopichand Sports Academy in Hyderabad by him, is what has given a sudden boost to the sport and resulted in international quality players coming out of it. He went on to say that he has plans of establishing a sports university in the city of Amaravati.
While speaking about his victory, Srikanth said that he owes it to the training that he gained from Gopichand Academy. He also stated that CM Mr Naidu has been his inspiration since a long time.
The other dignitaries who were present during the ceremony were Sports Minister Kollu Ravindra, Prattipati Pulla Rao, Devineni Umamaheswara Rao along with several other ministers.
