The state government has been planning to set up an integrated sports facility in Gandigundam that falls under the Anandapuram limits of Vishakhapatnam. The government has finally found 250 acres of land for the purpose. The land which falls under the Aganampudi area and is quite close to Donkada is presently owned by Vishakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP). A recent inspection of the land by LV Subrahmanyam along with other officials confirmed the fact that this land is perfect for building the proposed sports complex.
According to sources, VSP has agreed to give up this land to the government. A letter has also been sent to the Central Steel Ministry to seek their permission to allocate 250 acres of the land to Andhra Pradesh State Government to construct an integrated sports facility that is intended to be similar to Hyderabad’s Gachibowli Stadium. In return, the state government has agreed to allocate the same amount of land to VSP in Pedagantyada in Vizag.
The decision to set up such an integrated sports facility was taken because of the fact that the state does not have a stadium as per international standards, thus making it impossible for AP to host national and international sporting events. The proposed land in Donkada is close to Vishakhapatnam airport as well as National Highway NH16. According to June Gallyot, the District Sports Development Officer, the land will soon be finalized as the proposed site for the project.
The sports facility will house both indoor as well as outdoor stadiums along with a 4-lane synthetic warm up track, 10-lane 100 meters sprint track and an 8-lane 400 meters synthetic track. It is being estimated that a sum of INR 400 crores will be needed to set up this stadium. Experts say that if the chance of hosting the National Games 2018 was offered to AP by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), the government is sure to fast track all the sports projects that have been proposed including the Integrated Sports Complex.
